Unions under Oyo State tertiary institutions’ have suspended their indefinite industrial action, in other to allow for the implementation of the agreements reached.
The Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of the unions, Dr Kola Lawal, announced this in a resolution made available to reporters in Ibadan on Thursday.
Lawal explained that the decision followed a productive meeting held on Tuesday between the Rectors and Provosts of tertiary institutions in Oyo State and representatives of the JAC, mediated by Platinum Consultants.
He revealed that significant resolutions were reached to address the demands of the JAC.
9News Nigeria reports that part of the statement revealed that; “The meeting, convened to deliberate on the indefinite strike declared by JAC, focused on the full implementation of the new minimum wage and the long-overdue 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increments for staff of tertiary institutions in the state.
“After extensive discussions and negotiations, the following resolutions were unanimously agreed upon:
“That the management of tertiary institutions in Oyo state is committed to the full implementation of the new minimum wage.
“Including the 25 percent and 35 percent salary increases, effective from the March 2025 salary payment.
“Payment of arrears for the minimum wage consequential adjustment for January and February 2025.
“As well as the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increases from January to December 2024, will be paid in installments within 2025.
“This phased approach ensures the financial burden on the institutions is managed while fulfilling obligations to staff,” he said.
“The JAC further stated that, in light of these resolutions and the intervention of well-meaning individuals across the state, they had agreed to suspend the indefinite strike action immediately.”
Lawal confirmed that normal academic and administrative activities would resume across all tertiary institutions in Oyo state to allow for the implementation of the agreements reached.
He, however, emphasised that the suspension of the strike was contingent upon strict adherence to the terms of the agreement, while appreciating the cooperation of members.
“Any breach or delay in the implementation of the resolutions will result in the immediate and indefinite resumption of the strike action.
“The leadership of JAC wishes to express its profound appreciation to all parties who contributed to the resolution of this matter,” Lawal said
