Lagos Leads in Red Meat Consumption, With 7,000 Cows Slaughtered Daily

Lagos State has been identified as the highest consumer of red meat in Nigeria, with an estimated 7,000 cows slaughtered and consumed daily.

The staggering figure highlights the state’s significant demand for beef, driven by its large population and vibrant food industry.

According to experts, this high consumption rate is due to the city’s diverse culinary culture, which heavily features beef in local delicacies such as suya, pepper soup, and various traditional soups.

The red meat industry plays a crucial role in Lagos’ economy, supporting thousands of butchers, livestock traders, and food vendors.

However, concerns about food safety, cattle supply, and the environmental impact of livestock farming continue to spark discussions among stakeholders.

Relevant authorities are urged to implement stricter regulations to ensure hygienic meat processing and sustainable livestock management.
