President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has his concern regarding the severe flooding that has affected parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
This was confirmed in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, on Tuesday.
Described as the worst flood in recent decades, the disaster has displaced thousands of residents and impacted essential facilities including the Post Office, Nigerian Custom Service Office, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) and others.
In his statement, President Tinubu conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Borno State government and its residents, especially those who have lost their sources of livelihood due to the flood.
The flooding was caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, a water reservoir in Konduga local government area that flows through Maiduguri city.
As the relevant authorities continue to evaluate the damage, President Tinubu has urged for the immediate evacuation of individuals from the affected areas.
He assured the Borno state that the federal government is prepared to work together to address the urgent humanitarian needs of victims and those displaced.
Additionally, the president has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide aid to the flood victims.
“He remains committed to mobilizing federal resources to support the state during this difficult time,” the statement read.
At the time of this report, the extent of the damage and number of casualties remains unclear.
