A fresh crisis has erupted within the opposition Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) after party leaders in the North-West accused the party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, of attempting to hijack party’s structure in Kano and marginalize members outside the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
In joint statement, NDC North-West Vice Chairman Mohammed Rabiu Serina and Kano State Chairman Hussain Isa Mariga alleged that Kwankwaso has been sidelining non-Kwankwasiyya members and preventing them from contesting elective positions on the party’s platform. The officials said they were among the party’s founding members and had helped establish its structure across Kano and the wider North-West before Kwankwaso joined the party.
According to the party leaders, tensions intensified during preparations for the state congresses when Kwankwaso allegedly sought complete control of the party apparatus in Kano. The dispute reportedly required the intervention of NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, who brokered a power-sharing arrangements granting Kwankwaso’s camp 60 percent control of the party structure in the state while the original party leadership retained 40 percent.
Despite the agreement, party officials claim efforts to dominate the party structure have continued, raising concerns over internal unity as preparations for 2027 general elections gather momentum. The development comes amid reports growing disagreements within the NDC over candidate nominations and party leadership positions in Kano State.
The accusations underscores mounting tensions within the NDC, with observers warning that unresolved internal disputes could affects the party’s cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
