Lagos based women’s advocate, Islamiyat Oyefusi, has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to address alleged Lawlessness on Mile 12-Ojota Motorway
In a statement obtained by 9News Nigeria, Oyefusi expressed grave concern over the alarming state of the road, highlighting issues such as road vandalism, violence, and dangerous activities that she feels threaten the safety of road users.
She also emphasised that the daily occurrences of lawlessness along the stretch of the motorway has turned the area into a danger zone, as she also drew attention to the humanitarian crises unfolding on the motorway, including families begging for alms, children out of school, and the disabled resorting to living on the streets.
The advocate, therefore urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to prioritize the enforcement of traffic laws, ensure the removal of illegal activities from the motorway, and create alternative spaces for street traders.
“This is not just about road safety; it’s about protecting lives and restoring order to Lagos. A government that cannot guarantee the safety and dignity of its citizens has failed in its primary duty,” Princess Oyefusi declared.
She also called for a comprehensive strategy to address the social and economic factors driving these issues, such as unemployment, lack of education, and inadequate infrastructure.
“It is heartbreaking to see entire families, including young children, reduced to begging on the streets. This not only highlights the failure of social support systems but also poses a moral challenge for the government to act swiftly. The road should not be a market or a haven for disorder,” she added.
Meanwhile, Princess Oyefusi’s statement has sparked conversations on social media, with many Lagosians echoing her concerns and urging the government to take immediate steps to restore sanity to the motorway.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has yet to respond to the call, but residents are hopeful that her advocacy will bring much-needed attention to the plight of commuters and pedestrians along the Mile 12-Ojota corridor.
