A Nigerian woman, Buithat Hudu Muhammad Lawal, has stirred a wave of online reactions after publicly expressing her desire to find a second wife for her husband, citing deeply personal and spiritual reasons for her decision.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Lawal detailed her support for polygamy, clarifying that her intention was neither satirical nor impulsive.

Instead, to she presented a thought-out perceptive, shaped by her growth, personal experiences, and aspirations for what a just and spirituality -grounded polygamous union could look-alike.

“Yesterday, I made a post about wanting a co-wife, someone to join me in this journey of life with my husband. I noticed a lot of people thought I wasn’t serious, maybe even joked about it. But deep down, I meant every word”, she wrote.

Lawal emphasized that she has never been opposed to polygamy. What she finds problematic, however, is how men approach it – often lacking fairness, wisdom, and consideration for their families.

“I’ve always admired polygamy. It’s never being an issue for me. What I do take issue with is how many of our men go about it, lacking fairness and wisdom”, she added.

She explained that her vision for polygamy goes beyond culture or tradition. For her, It’s about shared responsibility, spiritual growth, and finding balance within a family unit.

She openly declared her support for her husband If he decides to marry another woman, as long as justice and harmony remain central.

“I’ve told my husband, If he wants to take another wife, I support it”, she stated.

Lawal also used the opportunity to describe the qualities she hopes to see in a potential co-wife.

According to her, the new wife must be kind, loving, and grounded in good character — someone who could be trusted not just with her husband, but also with the well-being of their children.

Her unusual but reflective take on polygamy has drawn mixed reactions on social media, while some online users praised her maturity and selflessness, others questioned the practicality of such an arrangement in today’s world.

Lawal concluded her post by posing two challenging questions.

Can her husband be truly just?, And can the new wife be spiritually grounded?

“Life really isn’t meant to be this hard. I just needed to share my thoughts on polygamy and what it means to me”, she wrote.

Her post has since gone viral, igniting conversations about modern marriages, gender roles, and the cultural dynamics of polygamy in Nigeria.
