The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, on Wednesday inaugurated a speed limit device manufacturing plant in Lekki, Lagos.

Oyeyemi said at the inauguration that the plant, the first of its kind in the country, would boost access to the device and thereby help to reduce crashes to the barest minimum.

The FRSC boss gave kudos to Highway Digital Nigeria Ltd., which established the plant, for their initiative.

He said the FRSC was happy with the wise economic decision by the investors, noting that the project would go a long way in supporting the campaign against speed-related crashes.

“Statistics have revealed that speed-related violation is one of the major factors responsible for most of the road traffic crashes that occur on the nation’s roads, with attendant casualties, in the past three years.

“The first premier production plant for speed limit devices shows the importance of the device to the campaign against road carnage,” Oyeyemi said.

According to him, Nigeria has more vehicles on its roads than most African countries and the FRSC has continued to battle with a high number of speed-related crashes in its effort to contain the menace of road traffic crashes in the country.

Mr Ugbaja Joseph, Coordinator, Lagos office, who represented the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), commended the efforts of the Highway Digital for establishing the plant in the country.

“We have given them certification for the good quality of the products and we appreciate the FRSC’s contributions,” he said.

Mr Morris Mbetsa, the Chief Executive Officer, Highway Digital Nigeria Limited, said the establishment of the plant would fast track the circulation of the products.

Mbetsa said that the quality of the products had been tested and trusted by SON, and it was affordable compared to imported ones.

He said the development would also create employment and had advantages in terms of knowledge transfer among professionals.
