The South-South Bureau Chief of 9NEWS NIGERIA, Ambassador Emmalex David Atseyinku, has cautioned Nigerian police officers against allowing themselves to be used by politicians, alleging that many political leaders abandon officers when they face danger or require medical assistance.
Ambassador Emmalex made the remarks while reacting to the appeal for financial assistance by Inspector Godday Aleru, one of the officers who survived the June 29 attack on the Mbodo Aluu C4i Security Post in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The attack claimed the lives of two police officers, while Inspector Aleru sustained severe gunshot injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
According to the journalist, Inspector Aleru has remained hospitalized and is reportedly struggling to finance his medical treatment, despite the sacrifices he made in the line of duty. He expressed concern that no politician has come forward to offer assistance to the injured officer.
Ambassador Emmalex alleged that during election periods, some politicians rely heavily on police officers to provide security and, in some cases, to carry out actions that undermine the electoral process. He argued that while politicians often seek the support of security personnel when it serves their interests, many fail to stand by them when they become victims of attacks or require urgent medical care.
He further stated that politicians often “romance” police officers when they need their cooperation but disappear when those same officers are injured, sick, or in need of financial assistance.
Using Inspector Aleru’s situation as an example, Ambassador Emmalex urged police officers across the country to learn from the incident and remain professional in the discharge of their constitutional duties rather than allowing themselves to be manipulated for political purposes.
“I hope police officers will learn from the case of Inspector Godday Aleru, the survivor of the Mbodo Aluu C4i Security Post attack. He is crying out for help to continue his medical treatment, yet no politician has come forward to support him,” he said.
He concluded with a strong message to officers nationwide, saying: **”Stop allowing politicians to use you because, when you need help the most, they will not be there for you.
