The opening weekend of England’s most prestigious football competition, the English Premier League, kicked off with all the glitz and excitement one can imagine. The shots, the saves, and the goals all culminated into a thrilling weekend of football action.
Defending champions, Manchester City, started their campaign when they played Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. It was Unai Emery’s first EPL game in charge as new coach of Arsenal, a big task for him against the formidable Pep Guardiola’s team. The Gunners started the game brightly with some spark and aggression, which has been noticeably absent in their game for a long while, but of course, the class and supremacy of Manchester City seemed too strong for the London team as goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernado Silva gave City a well-deserved 2-0 victory.
In other games, Manchester United started their campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester City with Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw getting the goals for United. Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea were too strong for Huddersfield United as they won 3-0, while Liverpool thumped Westham United 4-0. Tottenham also got the better of Newscastle at St. James’ Park with a 2-1 victory while new boys Wolverhampton Wanderers played a thrilling 2-2 draw with Everton on Saturday.
The EPL action continues this weekend with more cracking games. Top of the pack will be the game between Chelsea versus Arsenal. Watch out for our pre-match review for all the weekend games right here on 9News Nigeria.
