President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate implementation of a free healthcare program targeted at low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The directive followed a briefing by the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, on the state of pension management and challenges facing pensioners, particularly under the CPS.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Today, President Tinubu emphasized the critical need for robust welfare programs for pensioners, describing the healthcare initiative as “vital to safeguarding vulnerable retirees.”
In addition to the healthcare directive, the President also ordered the Director General of PenCom to promptly resolve the lingering police pension crisis, which has long drawn concern from affected officers and stakeholders.
He further called for the speedy enactment of long-overdue pension increases and the establishment of a minimum pension assurance to ensure a basic income floor for all pensioners under the CPS.
“These initiatives reflect the administration’s unwavering commitment to social justice and inclusive welfare,” Onanuga stated.
