Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of lacking compassion and failing to demonstrate genuine care for citizens.
Obi made the remarks during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a programme aired on Channels Television, where he criticised the current leadership and outlined his vision for a more empathetic Nigeria should he be elected president in 2027.
“People want to get up and see a president that cares, a president that shows compassion.
“Today we have a country without compassion. Leadership without compassion does not exist, it is a minus, it is not good for a country.” Obi said.
When asked to provide examples of the government’s perceived indifference, Obi cited President Tinubu’s decision to spend the 2024 Christmas holiday in Lagos, despite a tragic stampede in Ibadan where several children lost their lives during a Christmas party.
“There is no compassion. People lost their children who would have led this country in the future, and he went on a Christmas holiday,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor also condemned the president’s response to a deadly attack in Benue State, alleging that although Tinubu visited the state, he failed to visit Yelwata, the specific community where the attack occurred.
Obi, who ran for president in 2023 and is widely expected to run again in 2027, said Nigerians deserve a leader who listens, feels their pain, and acts in their interest.
