Owerri, Nigeria – In a significant demonstration of compassionate leadership and commitment to citizens’ welfare, the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has approved the release of N300 million to support Imo indigenes studying at the Nigerian Law School and returnees from South Africa.
The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, disclosed this in a statement issued in Owerri, explaining that the intervention reflects the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of Imo citizens facing economic and social challenges.
According to Emelumba, 250 Imo indigenes recently repatriated from South Africa will receive N1 million each as a reintegration grant to facilitate their rehabilitation and smooth return into society. The commissioner described the gesture as a humanitarian intervention aimed at helping the returnees rebuild their lives after enduring difficult circumstances abroad.
He noted that Governor Uzodinma was deeply concerned about the trauma and uncertainty experienced by the returnees and considered it necessary to provide financial assistance to ease their resettlement process.
“The governor is convinced that these citizens, who were compelled to return from South Africa, deserve support to enable them settle down and reintegrate into society with minimal discomfort,” Emelumba stated.
In a similar intervention, the governor approved the payment of N500,000 each to 500 Imo students currently enrolled in the Nigerian Law School. The commissioner explained that the assistance was in response to an appeal by the students, who sought government support to cushion the impact of rising living costs and economic pressures.
“The law students made a passionate appeal to His Excellency for assistance in coping with the increasing cost of living occasioned by global inflation. As a caring father and responsive leader, he promptly approved the support,” Emelumba said.
The commissioner further noted that the latest intervention aligns with the Shared Prosperity Agenda of the Uzodinma administration, which prioritizes the welfare of citizens alongside ongoing infrastructural development across the state.
Emelumba recalled that the governor has consistently supported law students from the state through various initiatives, including scholarship programmes and other educational assistance schemes.
He emphasized that beyond roads, healthcare, education, and other infrastructure projects, the administration remains committed to ensuring that vulnerable groups and deserving citizens receive direct support whenever the need arises.
The N500 million intervention package is expected to provide immediate relief to the beneficiaries while reinforcing the government’s commitment to inclusive development and citizen-centered governance in Imo State.
This singular benevolence has sparked huge hearty commendations and appreciable reactions in Imo state while beneficiaries have thanked His Excellency, Governor Uzodinma for his noble concern on Imo citizens both at home in diaspora.
