The Women’s Guild in Anglican Church of Ascension, Enugu, has called on the three tiers of government to focus more on girl-child education.

The leader of the guild, Mrs Uju Elosi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday that educating the girl-child would help to minimise gender-based violence.

Elosi said that the guild had been encouraging communities at local government levels through its evangelical works to support girl child education initiatives.

She added that aside supporting the education initiatives, the group had continued to fight retrogressive cultural practices on the girl child in the country.

The guild leader said that giving quality education to the girl child would go a long way to empower them for the economic benefit of their families

She advised against early marriage, and called for the speedy passage of the bill seeking equality for male and female children on sharing of inherited family property.

Elosi urged all Christians to continue to speak against gender inequality and violence against girl child, widows and women in general.
