Uganda Airlines has recently inaugurated its new Entebbe-Lagos route, marking an important milestone for the East African carrier. With the first flight receiving a water jet salute upon landing in Nigeria, the airline aims to expand its presence in West Africa and provide more connectivity options for travellers. This article will delve into the details of this new route, including the flight schedule, aircraft used, and the potential benefits it brings to both Uganda and Nigeria.

On October 19, Uganda Airlines touched down in Nigeria, marking the inauguration of its Entebbe-Lagos flights. The airline will operate three weekly flights between the two cities, offering travellers increased connectivity and shorter travel times. The first flight, UR900, departed from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos. The aircraft used for this route is an Airbus A330neo, which provides a comfortable and efficient flying experience for passengers.

The Entebbe-Lagos route will be operated three times a week, offering convenient travel options for both business and leisure travellers. The flight schedule is as follows:

  1. Entebbe-Lagos:
    UR900: 07:00-09:30 (Sun & Mon); 16:00-18:30 (Thu).
  2. Lagos-Entebbe:
    UR901: 11:00-17:30 (Sun & Mon); 20:00-02:30+1 (Thu).

With this new route, Uganda Airlines aims to provide shorter connection times for travelers heading to popular destinations such as Mumbai, Dubai, and Johannesburg. The strategic location of Entebbe Airport makes it an ideal hub for connecting flights, offering passengers a seamless travel experience.

The Aircraft and Fleet

Uganda Airlines operates a modern fleet consisting of two Airbus A330-800s and four CRJ900LRs. The Airbus A330neo, with registration 5X-NIL, is the aircraft of choice for the Entebbe-Lagos route. Although it may not be a widely popular aircraft type, it offers the necessary capacity and range to serve this route effectively. The rest of the fleet, comprising CRJ900LRs, is used for regional flights within Africa.

Benefits of the New Route

The launch of the Entebbe-Lagos route brings several benefits for both Uganda and Nigeria. Firstly, it significantly reduces travel time between the two countries. Previously, travelers had to endure long layovers or multiple connections to reach their destination. With Uganda Airlines’ direct flights, the journey time is reduced from over ten hours to just four hours, providing a more convenient option for travelers.

Moreover, the new route opens up opportunities for increased trade and tourism between Uganda and Nigeria. The inaugural flight was celebrated with the Nigeria-Uganda Trade and Tourism Business Forum, where stakeholders from both countries discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations. The flight acts as a gateway for business, tourism, culture, and entertainment, fostering closer ties between the two nations.

Expansion Plans and Future Prospects

Uganda Airlines has received approval to fly to two additional Nigerian cities, namely Kano (KAN) and Abuja (ABJ). This development demonstrates the airline’s commitment to expanding its network in Nigeria and further strengthening its presence in West Africa. The approval to fly to these cities aligns with the promotion of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), which aims to enhance air connectivity within the continent.

With Nigeria being a key aviation market in Africa, the entry of Uganda Airlines and other African carriers is a positive development. The country already has bilateral air services agreements (BASAs) with numerous countries, attracting international airlines such as Air France, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Ethiopian Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Uganda Airlines’ entry into the Nigerian market will further diversify the options available to travellers and promote healthy competition among airlines.

Remarks:
The launch of Uganda Airlines’ new Entebbe-Lagos route marks an important milestone for the East African carrier. With the inauguration of this route, travellers can now enjoy direct flights between Uganda and Nigeria, reducing travel time and providing more connectivity options. The airline’s modern fleet, including the Airbus A330neo, ensures a comfortable and efficient flying experience for passengers. As Uganda Airlines expands its network in West Africa, it opens up opportunities for increased trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between Uganda and Nigeria. This new route is a testament to the airline’s commitment to providing seamless travel experiences and contributing to the growth of the aviation industry in Africa.
