Research finding has attributed the incessant crises in Nigeria, especially Northern Nigeria to failure of governments to address economic and social issues since after the first republic.
In a presentation yesterday in Abuja, the Inter-Religious Peace building in Northern Nigeria (IPNN) in a document entitled Qualitative Research Report came out with findings responsible for violence experienced in Northern Nigeria, especially the Middle Belt area.
Jaye Gaskiya, Human Rights activist and civil society operator said the violence that is being experienced now had built up over the decades. He attributed it to failure of governance at all levels, and the absence of governance in communities.
He said the situation bred citizens that were alienated from society and made the society targets, so they acted in a manner that human lives had little of no value to them.
Gaskiya said to get to the root of the crises, government must return to the bases which is good governance; mobilise the citizens to perform functions and take responsibility for growth.
He added that over the years, the Agricultural policies were crop based; further alienating livestock producers and that as the economy got worse, anger and intolerance grew.
The rights activist said that these findings were research based and empirical, so policy makers must take it serious to act upon to achieve results.
On her part, Dr. Sumaye Hamza, a permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in Plateau State who was also a member of the research team said we must go back to the scratch of good parenting to raise citizens who will be good members of the society.
