On Sunday, the President of the United States of America (USA), Joe Biden issued an official pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases, despite an assurance that he would not intervene in his legal troubles.

Hunter Biden was convicted by jury in June of illegal buying and possession a gun as a drug user-after a gut-wrenching trial that delved into his drug abuse and dysfunction.

He pleaded guilty in September to nine tax offenses, stemming from $1.4m in taxes that he didn’t pay while spending lavishly on escorts, strippers cars and drugs.

However, the move is expected to subject the US judicial system under the microscope, especially at a time when incoming President Donald Trump has moved to appoint loyalists to the FBI and Justice Department single handedly.

In a social media post on Sunday night, Trump called the pardon “such an abuse and miscarriage of justice!. In an apparent joke, Trump also asked whether the pardoned includes his supporters who attacked the US Capitol during the January 6, 2021 insurrection-whom he has promised to pardon once he’s back in office.

“Your son committed a crime, same crime that other people committed and have been in prison for years. What happens to them after you free your son? That is abuse of power. People should treated the same same in America”.

Robert Joe Biden is an attorney and business man, he is the second son of the U.S President Joe Biden.

President Joe Biden on Sunday December 1, 2024 announced that his son Hunter Biden who faced sentencing for federal tax and gun convictions, making a reversal as he prepares to leave office.

Joe Biden said in a statement that he decided to issue the pardon because his son was “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted, saying that Hunter was “treated differently” from people who commit similar crimes.

The President said his political opponents in Congress “instigated” the charges “to attack me and oppose my election”, saying Hunter Biden was “singled out” for prosecution “only because he is my son”, the allegations that were previously raised by Hunter Biden lawyers and resoundingly rejected by two federal Judges. The Judge who oversaw his gun trial Delawe concluded that Hunter Biden’s theory of selective prosecution was “nonsensical under the facts here” .

Hunter Biden was convicted earlier this year of lying about his drug use when he bought a gun which amounts to felony and has also pleaded guilty in a separate tax evasion trial, but was yet to face sentencing.
