Morocco will no longer host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, following incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
The 2030 World Cup is set to jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco initially, Morocco was in strong contention to stage the tournament’s showpiece match, marking what would have been historic moment for the North Africa.
However, recent development surrounding the AFCON 2025 final between the hosts Morocco and Senegal appears to have altered those plans, and have reportedly promoted a review of the country’s suitability.
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final was marred by on-field protest, refereeing disputes, and organisational concerns leading FIFA and co-host to question Morocco ‘s capability to stage the World Cup final.
The scenes, described by international observers as damaging to the image of world football, prompted organizers to reassess Morocco’s readiness to host the World Cup final.
Rafael Louzan, President of the Spanish Football Federation, confirmed that Spain will now host the final, citing reputational concerns.
“We have seen scenes during the Africa Cup final that hurt the image of world football.
The final will be played here, where Spain has demonstrated its organisational capacity”, he said.
While Morocco will remain one of the co-hosts for 2030 tournament, the decision is a significant setback for the country, which had hoped to crown its historic role in the World Cup with the final match.
Football analysts believe the change may impact Morocco’s prestige on global stage, but co-hosting the tournament still presents an important opportunity for the nation to showcase its football infrastructure and utmost passion for the sport.
