Experts Warn Against Mixing Culture With Idol Worship

Following the recent high rise of ritual practices and contradictory traditional beliefs in the society, experts note that the misuse of traditional or spiritual beliefs is not unique to any one region, country or culture. Throughout history, individuals and groups have exploited deeply held beliefs to gain power, wealth or influence over others.

In parts of West Africa, including communities in Nigeria, Ghana and Benin, some self- proclaimed spiritual leaders have at times been accused of using fear of deities, shrines or ancestral curses to extort money, settle personal disputes or intimidate vulnerable citizens.

Some traditional rulers and respected custodians of culture have repeatedly condemned such practices, insisting that they do not represent authentic cultural values.

Similar concerns have been documented in parts of South Asia, where superstition and occult practices have occasionally been used to manipulate local populations. Authorities in countries such as India and Nepal have launched public awareness campaigns against fraudulent spiritual claims, ritual exploitation and harmful practices carried out in the name of tradition.

In certain remote areas of Latin America, reports have surfaced over the years of criminal groups exploiting indigenous spiritual beliefs to exert influence over local populations. Human rights advocates have stressed that such abuses should not be confused with the legitimate cultural heritage of indigenous communities.

Historical records also show that during medieval Europe, fear of supernatural forces and religious extremism contributed to witch hunts and persecution, leading to the suffering of thousands of innocent people. Historians often cite these events as examples of how belief systems can be manipulated when critical thinking and accountability are absent.

Across the world, scholars agree that culture and tradition are most beneficial when they promote human dignity, social harmony and development. They warn that whenever fear, coercion or exploitation become attached to cultural practices, communities must remain vigilant to prevent abuse by individuals seeking personal gain.

However, growing concerns are emerging across many societies and rural communities over the increasing manipulation of cultural and traditional institutions by individuals seeking personal power and influence.

Several reports have it that practitioners of such concocted idol practices often hide in rural communities, hidden corners, bushes, lonely areas, riverine locations, business and residential areas to manipulate their enterprise. Some occultic traditionalist are spotted practicing same in their rooms and compounds and hugely in some parts of Yoruba and Igbo land, such are practiced under Orji, Oha, Anunuebe, Aboshi, coconut and Nturugba trees. Trees are said to inhabit their shrines and deliver speedy invocations. In the North mud houses and drenched locations are best sites for such idol practioners.

Social commentators, religious leaders and community development advocates have warned that culture and tradition should not be confused with idol worship, arguing that the three concepts are fundamentally different in purpose and practice.

Culture is widely recognized as the collective way of life of a people, encompassing their language, values, customs, arts and social institutions. Tradition, on the other hand, refers to inherited beliefs and practices passed from one generation to another. Both are often regarded as vital tools for preserving identity, promoting unity and strengthening social cohesion within communities.

However, analysts warn that idol worship introduces a different dimension that can sometimes be exploited by individuals pursuing selfish interests.

According to observers, when fear, superstition and unchecked authority become intertwined with cultural practices, communities may become vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation.

Community leaders have expressed concern that some individuals deliberately blur the distinction between genuine cultural heritage and practices designed to instill fear among residents. They maintain that cultural evolution is necessary to ensure that inherited customs remain compatible with modern standards of human rights, environmental protection and social justice.

Experts encourage citizens to question practices that promote fear, discrimination or exploitation while continuing to celebrate traditions that foster peace, unity and development. They stress that preserving cultural heritage should go hand in hand with promoting education, transparency and accountability.

As globalization continues to reshape societies, communities are increasingly challenged to distinguish between valuable traditions worthy of preservation and practices that may hinder progress. The debate remains particularly relevant in regions where cultural institutions continue to wield significant social influence.
