The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, has died at the age of 66, less than nine months after his appointment.
Wushishi reportedly died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja on Friday, August 28, 2026, following a brief illness.
A source within the Commission told Daily Trust that he became ill about five days earlier while preparing for a trip to Rwanda.
He had reportedly suffered several collapses at his office and during official engagements.
Wushishi also collapsed on March 13 during a press briefing and the launch of the APLS 13 Report.
He reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and was resuscitated by doctors before being taken to hospital.
His remains were transported to Minna, Niger State, on Friday evening for burial according to Islamic rites.
The NPC had earlier announced that his burial would take place on Saturday, August 29.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Wushishi as NPC chairman in 2025. He was sworn in on December 3, 2025, alongside two other board members, succeeding Nasir Isa Kwarra.
The State House identified him as 65 years old at the time of his swearing-in.
Wushishi held a BSc in Biology and a master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
He also obtained a doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
His death comes less than nine months after he assumed office as chairman of the population commission.
