  • Grassroots Momentum Builds For APP Candidate As Voters Across Owerri Zone Demand Competence, Accessibility And Representation Beyond Party Lines

By Princely Onyenwe | News Desk

OWERRI, IMO STATE — The race for the Imo East Senatorial District is assuming a new political dimension as grassroots support continues to build around the Action Peoples Party (APP) candidate, Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amadi’s growing profile in Owerri Zone is being driven not merely by party politics but by a sustained grassroots engagement that has taken him to communities, traditional institutions, women’s groups, youths and other constituencies across the senatorial district.

9News Nigeria reports that there is clear indication pointing Chima Amadi’s candidature as best suitable for Imo East (Owerri zone) while his campaign has increasingly presented the contest as a choice between conventional partisan politics and a new model of people-centred representation.

Recent reports show that Amadi has intensified consultations and community engagements across Imo East, with his campaign declaring that it intends to take its message to every ward and community in the zone. His stated focus includes roads, insecurity, unemployment, healthcare, education and practical legislative representation.

Those interviewed in different parts of the senatorial district told our correspondent that Amadi’s accessibility and direct interaction with ordinary people are gradually separating him from the traditional political structure of the contest.

According to them, his grassroots sensitisation appears to cut across party affiliations, creating a political conversation that is increasingly centred on the individual candidate rather than the platform on which he is contesting.

Amadi is also bringing a combination of scholarship, entrepreneurship, advocacy and philanthropy into the race. His published profile identifies him as the founder and chairman of the Julian-Matt Group, a former chairman of the Centre for Transparency Advocacy and a philanthropist through the Jude and Juliana Amadi Foundation.

He is also described as a University of Ibadan-trained human nutritionist with further academic work at institutions including the London School of Economics and Political Science and University College London.

His philanthropic record has also become part of the political conversation. In 2025, reports said Amadi provided ₦20 million in educational support for about 100 students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, reinforcing his argument that human-capital development should remain central to public leadership.

The emerging contest, however, is far from a one-man race. Former Imo Deputy Governor Prince Eze Madumere has secured the Peoples Democratic Party ticket for Imo East and has already received endorsements from groups and stakeholders in the zone.

Former Secretary to the Imo State Government, Uche Onyeagocha, has also featured prominently in discussions around the senatorial contest, while APC’s Prince Alex Mbata remains another significant political factor in the race.

Against that background, supporters of Amadi believe the election could produce a major upset if voters prioritise personal competence, accessibility and performance potential over party loyalty.

They argue that the APP candidate has the capacity to challenge established political structures and potentially floor better-known rivals if the election is conducted transparently and voters are allowed to freely choose their preferred candidate.

The argument gaining traction among his supporters is simple: Imo East needs a senator who can connect with the masses in ordinary circumstances, understand their daily challenges and convert legislative influence into measurable development.

For Amadi’s supporters, that is where his grassroots strategy could become decisive. His campaign has repeatedly emphasised people-centred development, youth empowerment, community engagement and a Senate representation built around ideas rather than political slogans.

His organisation has also described its wider mission as promoting visionary leadership, people-centred development and grassroots impact across Imo State.

The candidate has further positioned himself as a potential bridge between grassroots aspirations and the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma, with his supporters saying an Amadi victory would enable him to consolidate development efforts in Owerri Zone while bringing additional federal attention to the constituency.

But beyond personalities and party structures, the credibility of the 2027 election itself could prove decisive.

Supporters of Amadi are calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that every legitimate vote cast in Imo East is properly recorded and counted, while urging security agencies to protect voters, electoral officials, candidates and communities throughout the electoral process.

They also want voters to turn out, cast their ballots and remain vigilant enough to protect the integrity of their votes without resorting to violence.

The central question now is whether the growing grassroots movement around Amadi can translate into actual votes across the 12 local government areas that make up Imo East Senatorial District.

With established political names already positioning themselves for the battle, the 2027 contest is shaping up to be more than a conventional party election. It could become a referendum on whether Owerri Zone wants continuity with familiar political structures or a fresh face promising a different style of representation.

For Amadi and his supporters, the message is already clear: the ballot should belong to the people, and the people should decide who represents them at the Senate.
