US President Donald Trump has renewed his pledge to give every adult US citizen $5,000 if Republicans emerge winners in both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump restated the proposal on Saturday while urging Americans to support Republican candidates in the November elections.
“If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I’m going to give all adult citizens in the United States of America $5,000.
“Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks.” Trump said.
The president had previously announced the proposal at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas in September, describing the payment as a “dividend” to American adults.
The pledge has generated questions over how such payments would be funded and authorised.
Any nationwide payment of this scale would require congressional action and an identified funding mechanism.
Trump has previously suggested that revenues generated from tariffs could be used to finance payments to Americans.
However, the details of the proposed $5,000 payment, including its legal mechanism, eligibility requirements and funding source, have not been fully established.
The 2026 midterm elections will determine the composition of the US House and Senate.
