The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered an investigation into an alleged extortion incident involving a police traffic warden and two State Civil Guard Corps personnel captured in a viral video in Owerri.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 8, 2026, when the three personnel allegedly harassed and extorted a motorist accused of driving without a driver’s licence.
The Imo State Police Command, in a press statement issued on October 9 by its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye Chekwube, condemned the conduct depicted in the video, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to the discipline, integrity and professionalism expected of law enforcement personnel.
The police identified the traffic warden as Inspector Chinewe Ejiogu, attached to the Shell Camp Divisional Police Headquarters, while the two State Civil Guard Corps personnel were identified as Kelechi Nzediagwu and Onyedikachi Chibuike.
According to the Command, all three personnel are currently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) as investigations into the incident proceed.
CP Bosso has consequently directed the Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to investigate the allegations and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The affected motorist has also been urged to report to the unit and provide relevant information that could assist investigators in establishing the facts of the case.
The Command stated that appropriate disciplinary action would follow upon the conclusion of the investigation, reiterating that no traffic violation justifies extortion, harassment or abuse of office by law enforcement personnel.
It further warned officers and other personnel to discharge their duties in accordance with the law and treat members of the public with respect.
The police also encouraged members of the public to report incidents of police misconduct through the appropriate channels, assuring residents that allegations of misconduct would be treated seriously.
The investigation comes amid public attention generated by the viral video, which has raised concerns about the conduct of personnel responsible for enforcing traffic regulations and maintaining public order in Imo State.
