The Mexican government has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, following months’ of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting.
The approval known as agrement, clears the way for the next steps in his diplomatic appointment.
Omokri announced the development on Wednesday in a post on his X handle. He said the charge d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, Mr Jose Manuel Briseno Flores delivered the agreement to the Director of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakilin.
The delivery of the agreement means Mexico has formally accepted Omokri as Nigeria’s envoy. Omokri said he will serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
“To God be the glory, the Charge d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr. Jose Manuel Briseno Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrement from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States”, he wrote.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had nominated Omokri in November 2025 alongside 68 others, including former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu. The Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025, while the President approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate in Match 6, 2926, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.
The approval follows months of waiting, with Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosing in August that Mexico was among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of an ambassadorial appointment. With the agrement now granted, Omokri’s posting can proceed through the remaining diplomatic formalities.
