There was pandemonium yesterday at Udensi Roundabout, few poles to Ebonyi State Government House Abakaliki when Police men and armed soldiers clashed yesterday.
According to Daily Independent, the fracas started when traffic Police impounded a tricycle popularly known as Keke for violating traffic light signals.
Eyewitness who asked not to be named explained that when efforts to secure the tricycle failed, the operator contacted the owner who happened to be a Nigerian soldier.
He narrated that minutes later, the soldier arrived with another tricycle and asked after the Traffic Police who impounded his tricycle.
This resulted in free for all fight as Traffic Police allegedly engaged the Soldier prompting a detachment of armed soldiers on guard at the International Conference Centre, ICC Abakaliki to rush to the scene and joined the fray.
While the matter was being settled inside ICC, a detachment of Mobil Police Men and Operatives of Anti Robbery Squad arrived in the scene and charged at the Soldiers.
The Soldiers however responded by cocking the trigger of their guns while making calls for reinforcement from their base.
It took the intervention of senior police officers from Police Headquarters Abakaliki to calm the situation and avoid what would have been a major security scare and bloodshed as reinforcement from Army base arrived in the scene minutes later.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi polce command, DSP Lovette Odah said it is an internal matter that would be settled by the appropriate authorities.
She said it was fortunate that the matter ended without casualty.
She said it was becoming worrisome how people violate the traffic light
