Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has recounted Nigeria’s historical foreign policy contributions to African liberation movements, revealing the extent of support extended to countries such as Angola and South Africa during the military era.
Speaking during a live television interview on Sunday, Obasanjo said Nigeria, under the leadership of the late General Murtala Muhammed, made significant financial and logistical sacrifices in solidarity with liberation struggles across the continent.
“During Murtala’s regime, we gave Angola $20 million, which was equivalent to about N12 million at the time. Nigerian Airways helped them have access to the outside world. We did the same with South Africa,” he said.
The former president highlighted that Nigeria played a strategic role in supporting African nations fighting colonialism and apartheid, describing the interventions as part of the country’s commitment to continental unity and freedom.
