The Federal Government has secured a $238 million loan facility from the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) to strengthen Nigeria’s national grid.
The agreement was reached following high-level engagements at the ongoing 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The loan is expected to support critical investments and transmission infrastructure, enhanced grid stability, and improve electricity access nationwide.
Officials say the intervention aligns with the administration’s drive to deliver reliable power supply as a foundation for industrial growth and economic competitiveness.
The $238 million JICA loan, complemented by Nigeria’s N19 billion counterpart funding, will fund the construction of:
– 102.95km of 330kv double circuit lines
-104.59km of 132kv double circuit lines.
-Four 330/132/33kv substations
-Multiple line bay extensions to improve efficiency and reduce system losses.
Additionally, three substations funded by JICA through a $32 million grant are set for commissioning in Apo (FCT), Keffi (Nasarawa State), and Apapa (Lagos State).
These projects, will enhanced supply reliability for households, businesses, and industrial clusters, including critical facilities like – Lagos Port and surrounding areas.
