The Federal Government has approved a grant of ₦4.2 billion to support cutting-edge research across Nigerian universities.
Out of 6,944 concept notes submitted, 158 research proposals were selected for funding following a rigorous screening and recommendation process by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC).
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Abdulmumin Oniyangi, Director of Public Affairs at TETFund, the funds were allocated across thematic areas:
•₦2.35 billion to Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI)
•₦1.03 billion to Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS)
•₦870.7 million to Cross Cutting (CC) initiatives
Among the beneficiary institutions, the Federal University of Technology, Minna emerged top with 15 research awards amounting to ₦400,035,708.51.
Other top recipients include: Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria – 13 awards, ₦359,809,744.18, Federal University of Technology, Akure – 12 awards, ₦341,608,592.80, Federal University of Technology, Owerri – 11 awards, ₦256,350,698.80, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi – 10 awards, ₦273,406,318.80, University of Ilorin – 8 awards, ₦220,538,834.12
In addition to research funding, the Federal Government also approved allocations under the 2025 Intervention for the establishment of Innovation Hubs and Entrepreneurship Centres across 15 institutions.
The universities receiving ₦1 billion each include: Federal University Dutse, University of Uyo and University of Ibadan
Twelve other institutions, mainly polytechnics and colleges of education, each received ₦750 million, including: Federal Polytechnic, Bida; Taraba State Polytechnic, Jalingo( Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola; Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zuru; Kano State Polytechnic, Kano; Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Uwana; Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi; Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri; Federal Polytechnic, Ede; Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo; College of Education (Technical), Kabba; Enugu State College of Education (Technical)
