Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has declared his intention to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a now-viral video, Governor Eno expressed his desire to join a political party where he can freely applaud President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies without being accused of anti-party behavior.
He acknowledged that he doesn’t possess the political boldness of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who is known for confronting party issues head-on.
Eno said this lack of confrontational strength contributed to his decision to exit the PDP.
Despite being a member of the opposition, he has spoken positively about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership .
Citing internal crisis within the PDP, Eno emphasized his willingness to risk legal disputes that could jeopardize his mandate following re-election.
Governor Eno’s statement: “By now, It should be clear that I’m leaving the party, If you don’t know that, then I don’t know what you know”
“As someone who truly loved the PDP, I hope to remain, but there’s no clear roadmap for securing further elections. In Akwa Ibom, our track record speaks for itself – we could win without a party. But at the national level, the PDP is fractured. Winning an election and losing it in court due to technicality like wrong signature is not a risk I’m willing to take”
“Political parties in Nigeria often lack real ideology differences – unlike, say, the Democrats in the U.S. Our focus remains the ARISE Agenda. I support President Tinubu because he inherited, not created, Nigeria’s current challenges”.
“Staying in the PDP while openly supporting a different president create a conflict. I don’t play both sides. If I support Tinubu, I should be in a party where I can express that and support freely. I’m not Wike – I don’t have the energy for internal battles. I’m just a straightforward man who says things as they are”.
