The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received more than ₦500 billion, representing over half of the approved budget for the 2027 general elections.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed the development during an interview on Friday, describing the release of funds as a major boost to the commission’s preparations.
Haruna, however, said INEC is still facing financial challenges, including unpaid debts from the 2023 general elections and outstanding statutory allocations.
According to him, the commission owes contractors about ₦6 billion due to inadequate funding during the last election, while more than ₦20 billion from previous statutory allocations is yet to be released.
Despite the financial constraints, Haruna said preparations for the 2027 elections are already in full swing.
He revealed that INEC has commenced the procurement of additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines and other essential election materials.
Haruna also disclosed that senior ICT officials recently travelled to China to conclude arrangements for the importation of new BVAS devices needed for the polls.
He expressed confidence that the remaining funds would be released promptly, enabling the commission to complete all necessary preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
