Islamic police in Nigeria’s northern state – of Kano have arrested nine Muslims in different parts of of the state for eating publicly in the first day of Ramadan.
This was confirmed by Deputy Commander of the Kano State Hisba Board Dr. Mujahidden Aminudden Abubakar, on Wednesday February 18, 2026.
The detainees – seven men and two women -claimed they were unaware Ramadan had begun.
Kano, a majority – Muslim state, operates Sharia law alongside Nigeria’s secular legal system.
During Ramadan, the Hisbah – the state’s Islamic enforcement body – patrols markets and restaurants to ensure Muslims observe the fast from sunrise to to sunset.
