- Family Seeks Answers as NAF Promises Probe; Senate and Reps Move to Investigate Aircraft Maintenance After 25 Lives Are Lost

IGBOKODA, Ondo State — Fresh concerns have emerged over the circumstances surrounding the fatal Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, following allegations by Victor Ani, younger brother of Sergeant Aisekegbe Esther Ani, one of the 25 people who died in the incident, that his sister had informed him of a technical or mechanical problem with the aircraft before the tragedy.
Victor, who spoke in an emotional video that circulated online, alleged that his sister had told him the aircraft experienced a technical problem during its journey from Abuja to Lagos and had to stop in Benin City, Edo State, for checks. His account has intensified calls for a transparent investigation into the incident, particularly concerning aircraft serviceability, maintenance procedures, operational safety and the welfare of military personnel.
The allegation, however, has not been established as the cause of the crash, and the circumstances surrounding the reported technical problem remain subject to official investigation.
According to reports of Victor’s statement, he said his sister had informed him that the aircraft developed what she described as a snag requiring technical or mechanical attention before it continued its journey. He questioned whether the circumstances surrounding the reported problem had been adequately examined and whether the family would receive clear information about the investigation.
His account has raised questions that investigators will need to address, including whether the reported technical issue was formally recorded, what inspections or repairs may have been carried out, whether the aircraft was cleared for further operations and whether any warning signs were identified before the fatal flight.
Victor also expressed anguish over what he described as inadequate communication from military authorities regarding the recovery of his sister’s remains and the information available to the family. He said the loss had devastated their household and made it difficult for him to console their mother, as Esther was the firstborn of the family.
The bereaved brother lamented that, despite being the deceased officer’s next of kin, he had not received the information he expected concerning the recovery process and arrangements for the victims’ families. His complaint has drawn attention to the need for timely communication, compassion and practical support for relatives dealing with sudden loss.
Esther Ani was among 20 passengers and five crew members who died when the NAF 931 ATR-42 aircraft crashed into a swamp in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on October 5, 2026. The aircraft was reportedly undertaking a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when the accident occurred.
The crash site presented significant challenges to search and recovery operations because of the swampy terrain, deep mud, murky water and surrounding mangroves. The difficult conditions complicated access to the submerged wreckage and recovery of the victims, while the search for critical evidence became a major part of the response.
The Nigerian Air Force has acknowledged the need for a comprehensive investigation. Its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the investigative process would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the issues raised by Victor.
The NAF maintained that conclusions about the cause of the crash would be premature until the investigation had been completed and the findings properly considered. This position places the focus on establishing the facts through technical evidence rather than treating allegations or eyewitness accounts as conclusive proof.
Investigators are expected to examine relevant operational and technical factors, including the aircraft’s maintenance history, serviceability records, flight documentation and any available communication between the crew and ground personnel. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder are also important to determining the aircraft’s performance and the crew’s actions in the final moments before the crash.
The Nigerian Air Force has commenced efforts to recover the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, commonly known as the black boxes. The devices could provide important evidence about the aircraft’s operating conditions, cockpit communications, warnings and other events preceding the accident.
The investigation has also attracted legislative attention, with the Senate and House of Representatives moving to examine issues surrounding the crash and the maintenance of military aircraft.
The Senate resolved to investigate budgetary provisions for Nigerian Air Force aircraft maintenance and called for greater scrutiny of aircraft serviceability and compliance with operational safety standards. Lawmakers also urged the relevant committees to examine the circumstances of the accident and consider measures to prevent similar tragedies.
The House of Representatives equally moved to investigate the crash and examine the condition of aircraft in the Air Force fleet, reinforcing concerns about maintenance funding, operational readiness and the protection of military personnel.
These developments have widened the debate beyond the immediate circumstances of the Igbokoda crash to the broader question of how Nigeria maintains and operates its military aircraft. Although military aviation involves complex operational demands, the safety of personnel remains central to the effectiveness of national defence and security operations.
For many Nigerians, the tragedy has become a reminder that military personnel are not merely figures in official casualty reports. They are parents, children, siblings, spouses and breadwinners whose lives and deaths have profound consequences for their families and communities.
Calls for accountability have therefore extended beyond identifying the immediate cause of the crash. They include demands for an evidence-based investigation, adequate support for affected families, transparent communication from the authorities and the implementation of any safety recommendations arising from the inquiry.
The circumstances surrounding Esther Ani’s reported conversation with her brother are particularly important because they raise questions that can be investigated against maintenance records, operational logs and technical evidence. Establishing whether the aircraft experienced a problem, how it was handled and whether it had any connection to the eventual crash will require documented findings from the investigation.
At the same time, the families of the deceased deserve timely information about the recovery of remains, identification procedures, funeral arrangements and any support available to them. Clear communication is essential to reducing uncertainty and ensuring that relatives are not left to depend solely on social media reports for information about their loved ones.
The Federal Government and military authorities are consequently under pressure to ensure that the investigation is thorough, credible and capable of answering the questions raised by the tragedy. Any deficiencies identified in aircraft maintenance, safety procedures or operational decision-making should lead to appropriate corrective measures.
As the investigation proceeds, Nigerians will be watching to see whether the authorities can establish what happened to NAF 931, determine whether any preventable failures contributed to the crash and demonstrate that lessons learned will translate into improved safety.
For Victor Ani and his family, however, the questions are deeply personal. Beyond the technical findings and official statements lies the loss of a daughter, sister and military officer whose death has left a painful gap in her family.
The central question now is whether the investigation will provide the families with credible answers and deliver practical reforms to protect the lives of those who serve Nigeria.
