The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has launched an investigation into a private aircraft that reportedly took off without regulatory approval after making an emergency landing on a roadway near Asaba, Delta State.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, has drawn attention within Nigeria’s aviation industry and raised fresh concerns about compliance with safety regulations governing private flight operations.

In a statement issued by the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the aircraft was said to have missed its approach to the airport at approximately 7:43 a.m. local time before landing on a road in Ogwashi-Uku, near Asaba.

All four crew members on board reportedly evacuated safely, and no injuries were recorded.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn when preliminary investigations revealed that the aircraft later departed the scene and flew to Lagos without obtaining the necessary authorization from aviation regulators.

According to the NCAA, Air Traffic Control authorities were informed only after the aircraft had already taken off, an action the regulator described as a violation of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig. CARs).

Aviation experts say aircraft involved in incidents are typically subjected to thorough inspections and safety assessments before being cleared for further operations. The unauthorized departure has therefore raised concerns about operational discipline and adherence to established aviation safety procedures.

Upon its arrival in Lagos, the NCAA immediately grounded the aircraft and commenced regulatory action against the crew and operator.

The Authority also announced the suspension of the operator’s Permit for Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF) pending a comprehensive review of operational practices, maintenance records, and safety documentation.

The NCAA confirmed that it has formally notified the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and is collaborating with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Industry analysts believe the case highlights the growing importance of strict regulatory compliance as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen aviation safety standards in line with global best practices.

While no casualties were recorded, the incident has sparked discussions among aviation professionals regarding oversight, accountability, and the need for operators to comply fully with safety protocols during emergency situations.

The NCAA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety, security, and regulatory compliance across Nigeria’s aviation sector, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway.

Findings from the investigation are expected to provide critical insights into the emergency landing, the unauthorized takeoff, and any potential regulatory breaches that may have occurred.
