Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen has overtaken his boyhood hero Didier Drogba in the UEFA Champions League scoring rankings, carving out a new chapter in his growing European legacy.
Victor Osimhen struck his 16th goal in the competition during Galatasaray’s dramatic tie against Juventus, moving one clear of Drogba’s tally of 15. It is a symbolic milestone for a player who has often spoken of his admiration for the former Ivory Coast captain.
Osimhen’s latest effort came at the Juventus Stadium, where his strike kept his team in the competition. Although Galatasaray fell 3-2 in the second leg, the Turkish champions progressed 7-5 on aggregate to book a place in the Round of 16.
With 16 goals, Osimhen now sits second among Africa’s all-time top scorers in the Champions League. Only Guinea international Serhou Guirassy, who has 18 goals, stands ahead of him on the continental chart.
However, Drogba’s Champions League legacy remains iconic, defined by his decisive performances and memorable moments on Europe’s biggest stage, especially after helping Chelsea to win the 2012 edition of the competition.
Note that Drogba inspired a wave of African forwards who believed they could dominate in Europe. Osimhen is now proving that belief was well placed, even though he is currently playing for a side that has yet to achieve much in the UEFA Champions League.
