The Hisbah Command in the Katagum Zone of Bauchi State has arrested seven persons over an alleged wife-swapping practice uncovered in Azare, headquarters of the Katagum Local Government Area.
According to officials of the Islamic morality enforcement agency, the suspects were reportedly linked to a group identified as “Wuddadu,” allegedly involved in organising the exchange of married women among members for illicit sexual relationships.
9News Nigeria gathered that the arrests followed intelligence reports and growing concerns within the community over activities believed to be in violation of Islamic teachings and public moral standards enforced under the Sharia legal system in parts of northern Nigeria.
Authorities disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the alleged activities and whether more individuals may be connected to the group.
The Hisbah Command, which operates as a religious policing body in several northern states, is responsible for enforcing Sharia-related regulations and promoting moral conduct within society.
Residents in the area were said to have expressed shock over the allegations, as the development has continued to generate reactions across the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the suspects had not been officially released, while the command said appropriate legal and religious procedures would be followed in handling the matter.
