The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed claims of an ongoing Christian genocide in the country.
CAN stated that terrorist attacks and killings witnessed across various parts of Nigeria are not targeted at any specific religious group.
In a statement by its Director of National Issues and Social Welfare, Abimbola Ayuba, CAN clarified that while the spate of violence across the nation remains deeply concerning, it is inaccurate to frame the crisis as a systematic attack on Christians.
“The pattern of killings has truly not been in a particular pattern. Bullets don’t look for a Christian or spare a Muslim,” He said emphasizing that victims of insecurity in Nigeria cut across religious and ethnic lines.
Ayuba noted that while foreign commentators have described the ongoing violence as a Christian genocide, such assertions oversimplify a complex national tragedy rooted in broader issues of terrorism, banditry and poor governance.
CAN, however, called on the federal government to intensify efforts in securing lives and property, stressing that every Nigerian, regardless of faith deserves protection from acts of terror and violence.
“The Church continues to pray for peace and stability, but prayer must go hand in hand with proactive government action,” Ayuba stated.
