Tinubu’s First Media Chat: How President set out His Reform Agenda

The first Presidential Media Chat of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been described as a defining moment that offered Nigerians an early insight into his vision, policies and strategy for governing the country.

The media engagement, held in December 2024, provided an opportunity for the President to explain some of the major economic decisions of his administration, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, exchange-rate reforms and proposed tax reforms.

While defending the removal of the fuel subsidy, Tinubu said he had no regrets about the decision, maintaining that the measure was necessary to address longstanding economic challenges. 

He also rejected calls for price controls, stressing that the increased supply was a more sustainable approach to addressing rising prices.

The President also discussed the tax reform bills before the National Assembly, as well as concerns over the size of government. 

President Tinubu defended the size of his cabinet, noting that he believed the ministers had specific responsibilities that needed to be fulfilled.

The administration’s broader reform agenda has also included efforts to strengthen the manufacturing sector, support small and medium-sized businesses and make higher education more accessible through student loans. 

Tinubu had previously outlined these measures as part of his response to the country’s economic challenges.

While the President’s policies have attracted criticism, particularly over the economic hardship associated with subsidy removal and other reforms, his supporters have argued that the measures are intended to address structural problems in the Nigerian economy and lay the foundation for long-term growth.

The significance of the first media engagement, therefore, lies not only in the issues discussed but also in the opportunity it provided for the President to articulate the reasoning behind some of the decisions that have defined his administration.

President Tinubu is not known for treating media engagements as casual appearances.
