Ibadan, Oyo State- Nigeria records a major breakthrough as security forces reportedly rescue 42 abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, offering renewed hope in the fight against banditry and school attacks.
Relief and celebration swept across parts of Nigeria Wednesday following reports that dozens of abducted schoolchildren and teachers from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State were rescued during a coordinated security operation.
The victims, reportedly including more than 40 pupils and several teachers kidnapped during attacks on schools in the area on May 15, were said to have regained freedom after an intensive operation involving the Nigerian Army, Police, local vigilantes, forest hunters, and recently deployed forest guards approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The abductions, which drew nationwide outrage and international attention, had triggered fears over the growing insecurity affecting schools and rural communities in Nigeria. The attacks in Oriire LGA were widely condemned after armed men stormed schools and whisked away pupils and teachers into nearby forests.
According to security sources, intelligence gathering, community collaboration, and aerial surveillance reportedly played a crucial role in tracking the kidnappers’ movements and locating the victims deep inside forest hideouts.
Emotional scenes were witnessed as rescued children reunited with their families, while residents praised security operatives for what many described as one of the most significant rescue efforts in recent months.
One of the rescued teachers reportedly described the experience as “terrifying and unforgettable,” while expressing gratitude to security personnel and local volunteers who participated in the operation.
President Tinubu commended the security agencies for their efforts and reiterated his administration’s commitment to tackling kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry across the country.
The development also comes amid heightened public concern over school safety in Nigeria, especially after the Nigeria Union of Teachers declared protests and industrial actions demanding urgent government intervention following the abductions.
Security analysts say the successful operation could mark a major morale boost for Nigeria’s ongoing counter-banditry campaign, while also highlighting the growing importance of intelligence-led operations, local security partnerships, and technology-driven surveillance in combating insecurity.
Across social media, Nigerians at home and in the diaspora celebrated the reported rescue, with many calling it a rare moment of hope amid persistent security challenges facing Africa’s most populous nation.
The Federal Government has assured citizens that efforts are ongoing to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities to prevent future attacks.
