The Federal Government and the Imo State Government have officially sealed an agreement establishing a new Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Okigwe, marking a major milestone in healthcare expansion and medical infrastructure development in Southeastern Nigeria.
The agreement followed the recent conversion of the former Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, into a teaching hospital for the Federal University of Technology Owerri, creating the need for another federal tertiary healthcare institution within the state.
Under the pact signed on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the Imo State Government officially transferred the former General Hospital, Okigwe, to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for its upgrade into a full-fledged Federal Medical Centre.
Governor Hope Uzodinma described the development as a strategic intervention that would improve access to quality healthcare services, boost medical employment opportunities, and reduce pressure on existing federal hospitals in the Southeast.
Health experts and policy analysts say the establishment of the FMC in Okigwe is expected to strengthen emergency response services, specialist healthcare delivery, and medical training across Imo State and neighboring states.
The move is also viewed as part of broader federal efforts to decentralize tertiary healthcare services and address increasing patient loads in urban medical facilities.
The new medical centre is projected to stimulate economic activities in Okigwe through infrastructure growth, healthcare investments, and increased demand for skilled and non-skilled workers within the health sector.
The development has already attracted positive reactions from residents and stakeholders who believe the project will transform Okigwe into a major healthcare hub in the Southeast region.
