Group berates Ikonne over comment on Kalu

From: OKEY SAMPSON, Aba

A group, Concern Abians for Good Governance and Justice (CAGGJ), has berated Prince Paul Ikonne, over his comment on the former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, for crossing to the All Progressives Alliance (APC).

Speaking on Kalu’s defection to APC, chairman of the party in the state, Chief Donatus Nwankpa said, “Kalu is an asset to the party in the state, the South-east and the country as a whole. I am sure that he will use his wealth of experience in politics to grow the party in the state. His joining the party is one of the landmark achievements of the leadership of the APC. We all are looking forward to working harmoniously with him”.

However, Ikonne thought otherwise, alleging that Kalu’s joining APC will not add any value to the party instead, it would create confusion. He laso expressed the fear that the former governor would hijack the party structure in the state and in the South-East.

Reacting to Ikonne’s statement, CAGGJ Coordinator, Egwu D. Uwa, said it was surprising that the son of Eze Isaac Ikonne, who was made the chairman of Abia State Traditional Rulers Council by the former governor would be the lone, yet dissenting voice in APC since Kalu joined the party.

Uwa said it was unfortunate that Ikonne had joined the league of ingrates in the state, who forgot easily what the former governor did for them, by backstabbing him.

“People should be able to appreciate others who have done them one favour or the other. If there was someone who shouldn’t be happy that Kalu joined APC, it should not have been Paul Ikonne for reasons he and those around him should know better”.

Uwa said the beauty of democracy was that it allowed anybody the freedom to express his opinion on any issue, which of course he was entitled to, but added that as a periphery member of  the APC, Ikonne should have respected the position of national, South East and Abia State leadership of the party who had seen Kalu as an asset to APC.

“Furthermore, I don’t think that Ikonne is politically more sagacious than the governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Sam Nkire, APC BoT member from Abia or renowned economist and ex-Finance Minister, Idika Kalu who have all said Kalu’s entry into APC will prop up the party in the Southeast”, Uwa asserted.
