They say politics is a game for only men; that politics is as dangerous as it is deadly. That it has zero tolerance for women. But there is a woman that has proved bookmakers wrong by all standards.
Hon Uju Onwudiwe is the woman with such audacity and prowess to dive into a supposed men’s game with so much confidence, passion, competence and tenacity.
She was the immediate past member for Njaba constituency in the Imo state House of Assembly.
Rt. Hon. Uju Onwudiwe stands out as a prolific lawmaker in the Imo state legislature. She has always been motivated by her people and family.
According to her, politics is a job meant for appeasing the people, with specifics to interest and development. She maintains that her joy comes from impacting on the lives of people.
It is also important to note that she had a political background. Being raised by a politician and businesswoman mother and a civil servant father, politics with good intentions was inculcated in her upbringing.
On Wednesday, 19th June, 2019, Hon. Uju Onwudiwe, member representing Njaba State Constituency, emerged as the Deputy Minority Leader.
Sometime in 2022, Hon. Uju Onwudiwe made calls for women to venture into politics, insisting that ‘Women can lead Nigeria’.
She advocated for the inclusion of women in governance with the belief that women are potential instructors and influencers in the political realm.
Hon. Onwudiwe was the chief sponsor of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition bill (VAPP) 2021 into law in Imo State despite strong resistance and opposition.
The Bill was basically hinged on fighting sexual assaults like rape of either gender (men or women).
During her time in the legislature, Hon. Onwudiwe was one of two female lawmakers at the Imo State assembly.
Indeed Nigeria is blessed with exceptional women and judging from antecedents, Nigerian women do standout in the executive, legislative and judicial system.
Titled, Igolo Njaba, She is also a seasoned administrator and a people’s person. Igolo has always maintained that her core leadership values emphasizes and promotes the needs of the people being governed.
Therefore, Hon. Uju Onwudiwe as a charitable and attentive citizen, is a new kind of politician and it is obvious that others should take notes from this solicitous persona.
