The Rivers State Government is taking steps to address the ongoing traffic gridlock experienced by motorists along the UTC-Azikiwe road in Port Harcourt.

The two companies, BUA Group, and Olam Grains, have been given two weeks to ensure that their truck drivers do not contribute to this traffic nuisance any longer.

This issue was discussed during a meeting on Wednesday between the Rivers Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Evans Bipi, and representatives from both companies. They explored possible measures to alleviate the traffic situation.

Rt. Hon. Bipi stated that the Ministry will establish a task force aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the area. He noted that the persistent backups along the UTC-Azikiwe road are largely caused by the indiscriminate parking of trucks. Bipi expressed his disapproval of this reckless practice, emphasizing that it tarnishes the City Centre, especially since it is near the Rivers State Government House.

He informed attendees that the task force would include representatives from each of the companies involved. The Commissioner assured them of adequate support to enable the task force to restore order to the area as quickly as possible.

In his remarks, the General Manager of National Logistics at Olam Grains mentioned an unresolved land issue with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and requested government intervention. He explained that they had acquired a nearby piece of land to use as a holding bay for their trucks, which could serve as part of a permanent solution to the traffic congestion on the Azikiwe road.

Meanwhile, Alh. Bashir Kwalli, General Manager in charge of Transport at BUA Group, requested more time for both companies to collaborate with truck operators to find safer and more suitable parking alternatives. He assured that they would educate the truck drivers on the importance of minimizing traffic bottlenecks. Compose MessageCompose Message
