A man was seriously injured by a stray bullet during the recently concluded local government election in Rivers State, resulting in the tragic loss of one of his eyes.
The incident occurred when supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara clashed with Pro-Wike supporters over a federal high court order that had stopped the election. Reports indicate that Mr. Paul Elemuwa, an indigene of Omuohia, Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area, was struck by a stray bullet as Pro-Wike supporters invaded his polling unit. During this chaos, they attempted to carry away the ballot box and the results, firing their weapons indiscriminately as others ran for their lives.
Mr. Elemuwa recounted to our correspondent that he was casting his vote when unknown gunmen invaded his polling station and opened fire. In an effort to escape, he was struck by a stray bullet in his right eye and fell to the ground. He was subsequently rushed to various hospitals for treatment.
As he spoke, Mr. Elemuwa lamented that he cannot see with his right eye and expressed his wish to regain his sight. As a professional welder, he relied on his vision to support his family, including his wife and children. He is now calling on the Rivers State Government, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Ikwerre Local Government Chairman, and the general public to come to his aid.
