The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, is gearing up for a nationwide protest against the 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs, slated for February 4, 2025.

The decision comes after the Federal Government approved 50% increase, despite telecom operators initially proposing a 100% hike.

NLC President, Joe Aribo has vehemently rejected the increase, citing its potential to exacerbate economic hardship for Nigerians already grappling with inflation, high fuel prices, and rising electricity tariffs.

Ajaero has directed NLC affiliates to mobilize for the protest and invited civil society groups to join the cause.

The Union is demanding an immediate suspension of the tariff hike and a stakeholder dialogue not review the decision. If there demands aren’t met, the NLC may escalated its actions, including a nationwide telecom service boycott.

Ajaero emphasized the NLC’s commitment to protecting Nigerian workers from exploitative policies, urging citizens to resist policies prioritizing corporate profits over public welfare.
