President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦10.3 billion for the bulk purchase of Nigerian-made medications and diagnostic kits.
The initiative, part of the National Medical Relief Programme, ensures a ward-by-ward distribution of essential medical supplies to all 774 local government areas (LGAs) across the country.
The Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate will spearhead the programme.
It is designed to improve access to critical treatments, strengthen local pharmaceutical production, create jobs, and provide relief to vulnerable Nigerians.
A major highlight of the initiative is the inclusion of diabetes diagnostic kits manufactured by a Lagos-based Nigerian company, marking the first time such an innovation has been developed and adopted in Africa.
This strategic investment supports homegrown solutions.
Beyond medications and diagnostic tools, the programme also funds advanced medical equipment, including mobile X-ray machines and CT scanners, which will be deployed to regional healthcare hubs.
These investments are expected improve patient care, and reduce dependency on imported medical equipment.
By prioritizing Nigerian-made products, the initiative not only enhances healthcare delivery but also stimulates economic growth by supporting local industries.
