A United States service member has been declared missing after Iranian forces shot down a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet in a major escalation of the ongoing Middle East conflict, 9News Nigeria reports.
The incident, which occurred deep inside Iranian territory, marks one of the most significant direct confrontations between U.S. and Iranian forces since the war began weeks ago. According to U.S. defence officials, the aircraft—operated by a two-person crew—was hit during combat operations, forcing both personnel to eject.
One of the crew members has since been rescued in a high-risk recovery mission involving U.S. special forces and military aircraft. However, the second service member remains unaccounted for, triggering an urgent and ongoing search-and-rescue operation amid hostile conditions.
Military sources indicate that the search effort is extremely sensitive, as there are fears Iranian forces or affiliated groups could locate the missing soldier first.
