Troops of the 73 Battalion under Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a 25-year-old man, identified as Mubarak Mohammed, for allegedly impersonating a soldier at the Njimitilo Campus of Kasshim Ibrahim University in Borno State.
According to security sources, the suspect was apprehended on July 1, 2026 at about 4:30 p.m. after he was spotted wearing a desert camouflage military uniform on the university campus.
During preliminary interrogation, Mubarak Mohammed reportedly claimed he was a newly admitted student who had borrowed the military uniform to attend the institutions’s Career Week programme.
However, security personnel said his explanation raised several red flags. He was reportedly unable to communicate in English, could not produce a valid student identity card, and was also unable to access the university portal to verify his claim of being a newly admitted student.
Further checks by the university management reportedly confirmed that Mubarak Mohammed is not a registered student of Kasshim Ibrahim University. Officials also disclosed that attendance at the Career Week event was restricted to final -year students, further contradicting the suspect’s account.
Security sources disclosed that the suspect is currently being investigated on suspicion of gathering intelligence for criminal or terrorist elements while allegedly posing as a member of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He remains in the custody of the 73 Battalion as investigations continue.
Military authorities have once again warned members of the public that impersonating personnel of the Armed Forces constitutes a serious security offence and poses significant risks, as such acts can be exploited by criminal and terrorist groups to undermine national security.
