The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lotus Bank and Hackerbella Ltd over allegations that students’ personal data were used to open bank accounts unlawfully.
The investigation is aimed at determining how the students’ personal information was obtained, processed and allegedly used to create bank accounts without their consent or valid legal grounds.
The NDPC is expected to examine the roles played by the three organisations in the alleged processing of the students’ data.
The findings of this investigation will determine whether their actions complied with Nigeria’s data protection laws or not.
Further details of the investigation are expected as the NDPC continues its inquiry into the allegations.
