A hospital building in Calabar, Cross River State, has collapsed after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide and washed away the soil supporting the structure.
The affected facility has been identified as UNICEM Hospital, which serves workers and residents in the area.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, August 13, after torrential rainfall destabilised the ground around the building.
A video circulated on X on Friday showed the structure left dangerously suspended after the earth beneath it was eroded.
The building eventually gave way and crashed into the gully below.
There were no immediate reports confirming casualties as of the time of filing this report.
The collapse has raised fresh concerns about erosion and the safety of buildings constructed on vulnerable terrain in Calabar.
The Cross River State Government had also not issued an official statement on the incident as of Friday.
Reacting to the video, some social media users called for urgent measures to address recurring landslides and erosion in parts of the city.
One X user, @Dacolls1, said the recurring landslides required proper investigation by professionals, while attributing the incident largely to poor erosion control.
Another user, @okafor_nna54, questioned whether anyone was inside the building when it collapsed and urged authorities to act whenever structures show signs of danger.
A third user, @Northernigbo, raised questions about the quality of construction and called for the engineer responsible to be investigated.
The incident comes amid broader concerns about drainage, flooding and erosion affecting infrastructure in parts of Calabar during periods of heavy rainfall.
