Amid ongoing concerns of insecurity nationwide, several members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC,were abducted on Wednesday in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, while travelling to Abuja after completing their orientation programme in Bayelsa, with the police confirming the rescue of 11 victims.
According to reports, the victims were traveling in two buses, including a Peace Mass Transit bus and another vehicle marked 564.
The abduction occurred at 4:40 p.m on Wednesday, August 26, around Ogden Zaria, near the Ogden Zaria -Igo Junction.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, armed hoodlums emerged from the bush and blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions abducting some passengers while others escaped into the surrounding bush.
In a statement made available to newsmen, spokesman for the Kogi State Police Command, Saliu Afusat, said security operatives launched a rescue operation immediately after receiving a distress call.
According to her, the operation led to the rescue of 11 abducted victims, including the drivers of the two buses involved in the incident.
Preliminary debriefing showed that most of the rescued victims were NYSC members travelling from Bayelsa to Abuja.
The police said the operation is still ongoing in the surrounding forest to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
The abduction adds to the series of kidnapping attacks reported along Kogi’s highways and forest corridors in recent weeks.
The incident has also sparked fresh outrage over the safety of corps members travelling across the country.
