A humanitarian and field operations professional, Lydia Chinenye Nwakwo has repeatedly been killed during a bandit attack in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Nwankwo’s sister, Chisom Nwakwo, confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Wednesday October 7, 2026, saying the victim and members of her team came under attack while returning from the field work in Tuesday October 6.
According to Chisom, the attackers opened fire on the team, killing Lydia during the assault. “Bandit attacked her and her team and shot her dead”, she wrote.
Her death has reportedly sent shockwaves through the humanitarian community in Sokoto, with colleagues remembering her as a committed field worker who dedicated herself to providing assistance to vulnerable people in -to-reach communities.
The Sokoto State Police Command has also confirmed the attack on communities in Shagari Local Government Area, with reports that a police inspector was killed during the the incident.
Police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai confirmed the attack on Tuesday, saying the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Shagari had briefed the command.
“I just spoke with the DPO in charge of Shagari now,who confirmed the attack on some communities in the local. We are still on it. I cannot give details now until I gather my information about the incident. I will get back to you on it”, Rufai said.
The latest attack has heightened concerns over the security situation in parts of Shagari, with residents urging the government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance, increase patrols and deploy additional personnel to vulnerable communities.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the attack and the casualties as investigations continue.
